MANCHESTER, England (AP) England made a confident start and reached 95-1 at lunch after captain Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to bat in the second test against Pakistan on Friday.

Joe Root will resume on 41 and Cook was batting on 40 as both took full advantage of good batting conditions on an easy-paced wicket at Old Trafford.

Mohammad Amir made the only breakthrough when he clean bowled Alex Hales (10) off a delivery that nipped back into the right-hander.

James Anderson and all-rounder Ben Stokes spiced England bowling attack and returned from their injuries after missing the first test defeat, replacing Steven Finn and Jake Ball.
