Michigan defensive coordinator Greg Mattison won't be getting a new recruit to help out on the defensive line.
Head basketball coach John Beilein just isn't willing to share.
At their scheduled media availabilities on Tuesday, both coaches talked about Michigan's newest basketball star, 6-foot-10, 256-pound Mitch McGary.
McGary is known as a high-energy player, but the freshman forward opened a lot of eyes with his dominating performance in Saturday's NCAA tournament victory over Virginia Commonwealth. McGary had 21 points and 14 rebounds as Michigan advanced to the Sweet 16.
"I love him," Mattison joked Tuesday morning, saying he would put McGary at defensive end. "I can promise he would play right away and get a lot of sacks."
McGary described himself as having a "football player's mentality" after the VCU game, and anyone who has seen his hard screens and fear-no-consequences pursuit of every loose ball would quickly agree. But he won't get his shot at being the next Bo Jackson.
A couple hours later and a few hundred yards away from where the football team was taking part in spring drills, Beilein wasn't going for it, smiling while saying he will not share his young star with Brady Hoke and Team 134.
Assistant coach Bacari Alexander made things ever clearer on Twitter:
"Mitch McGary will not be playing Football at Michigan," he said in a tweet that was hash-tagged #handsoffbuddy.
Michigan plays Kansas in the Round of 16 Friday night at Cowboys Stadium.
