Dorman-Hixon, Parratto-Cozad in early lead at Olympic trials

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Samuel Dorman and Michael Hixon took a big lead Saturday in the men's synchronized 3-meter event on the first day of the U.S. Olympic diving trials.

Dorman and Hixon finished the semifinals with a combined score of 871.53. Troy Dumais and Kristian Ipsen were second at 815.01. Dumais, a bronze medalist at the London Olympics, is trying to become the first American male diver to compete in five Olympics.

In Saturday's only other event, Jessica Parratto and Amy Cozad took a lead of nearly 40 points over Anna James and Katrina Young. Parratto and Cozad finished with a combined score of 617.28, while James and Young are at 576.00.

The finals in both events will be held Wednesday. Only the winners qualify for the American team bound for Rio.
