PHOENIX -- Chris Young remains tethered to the training room while he rehabs his right shoulder, but it is unlikely that he will return from the disabled list when eligible May 3, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Monday.
“He’s attacking it the best he can. It’s going to take him some time. I don’t expect him to be back in 15 days,” said Gibson, who added that he had no timetable for Young’s return.
Young suffered what the D-back called a slight ligament tear in his right shoulder when he collided with the fence while catching a fly ball April 17. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list the next day.
The D-backs begin a 10-game road trip in Miami on Friday, with later stops in Washington and New York. Gibson made it sound as if Young will miss the entire trip, which concludes with a four-game series May 4-6 against the Mets.
The D-backs are 1-4 without Young, whose offense carried them to a 7-3 record, and he is still on the NL leaderboard despite missing five games. Young is tied for second in home runs (five) and tied for sixth in RBIs (13) entering Monday's games. His OPS of 1.397 was second in the league at the time of his injury, and it would be still be second if he had enough at-bats to qualify.
The D-backs played three games without Young and Justin Upton before Upton returned to the lineup with a bone bruise in his left thumb.
Upton is not 100 percent and will not be for a while, Gibson has said, but his presence has helped despite his production being down. Upton did not have a home run or an RBI entering Monday’s game. He was hitting .205, but his on-base percentage was .354.
“I think he just needs to work on his swing. With his injury, he’s capable of being able to execute his swing. He didn’t hit a home run in spring training, he didn’t hit a home run prior to his injury,” Gibson said.
“I just don’t think he’s been able to find his slot yet. He’s been working on that. I’ve visited with him and he’s on the right track. Now, we have high expectations for him, but he’s contributed pretty well. The fact that he’s playing now is something we really need.
Gibson had no further update on Daniel Hudson, placed on the disabled list Saturday with a right shoulder impingement. The soreness appears to be on the side of his shoulder, not at the top, where the rotator cuff is located.
“I don’t have any secret information, trust me,” Gibson said. "He’s not going to throw for five days. Then he’ll probably start playing catch; if it still hurts we’ll probably shut him down and wait longer. The MRI shows nothing that is alarming."
Hudson missed his first start Monday, with Wade Miley taking over and Jonathan Albaladejo likely to assume the role of the long man in the bullpen, Gibson said. If Hudson returns when eligible on May 7, he would miss only two starts.
After their East Coast trip, the D-backs begin a six-game homestand against St. Louis and San Francisco, with the three-game series against the Cardinals starting May 7.
