PHOENIX – The Diamondbacks shuffled their pitching staff before heading to Los Angeles for a three-game series with the Dodgers, recalling left-handed reliever Joe Paterson and right-hander Charles Brewer from Triple-A Reno, optioning Tyler Skaggs to Reno and placing left-hander Matt Reynolds on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left elbow.

Paterson, 27, was 2-1 with a 2.36 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 24 relief appearances with Reno this season and has not allowed a run in his last 14 appearances covering 15 innings. He has limited left-handed hitters to a .143 average.

Paterson pitched in 68 games with the D-backs in 2011-12, going 0-3 with one save and a 5.40 ERA.

Brewer, 25, is 3-6 with a 5.85 ERA in 12 starts with Reno in 2013. The Paradise Valley native, who attended Scottsdale Chaparral High School, has no major league experience. Over five minor-league seasons, he is 37-24 with a 5.98 ERA.

Brewer is a candidate to take Skaggs' place in the rotation, but because the Diamondbacks have an off-day on Thursday, they could choose to go with four starters until next Tuesday's game against Miami. Long reliever Josh Collmenter could also be considered for a start.

Skaggs has made three starts this season, going 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 16.2 innings.

Reynolds has an 0-2 record with 2 saves and a 1.98 ERA in 30 games.
