The Diamondbacks sent much-hyped pitching prospect Trevor Bauer to the minors on Friday, one of eight moves as the team continues to trim its camp roster leading up to Opening Day.
Bauer, the No. 3 pick in last year's MLB draft and the subject of much discussion in D-backs camp this spring, was optioned to Double-A Mobile. The move did not come as a surprise since manager Kirk Gibson said last week that second-year right-hander Josh Collmenter will open the season as the fifth starter, leaving no openings in the rotation.
Bauer made three starts this spring, posting a 3.60 ERA and .297 batting averaged allowed in 10 innings. He gave up 11 hits, struck out nine and walked just one.
In Friday's other moves, right-handers Barry Enright and Sam Demel and outfielder David Winfree were optioned to Triple-A Reno, right-hander Chris Jakubauskas and infielder Rusty Ryal were reassigned to to Reno, and right-hander Charles Brewer and infielder Matt Davidson were reassigned to Mobile.
The D-backs have 37 players remaining in major league camp.
