D-backs demote Shaw, add reliever Bergesen

The Diamondbacks shuffled their bullpen Sunday, adding recently claimed reliever Brad Bergesen to the roster and sending Bryan Shaw to Triple-A Reno.
Bergesen, 26, was claimed off waivers from the Orioles on Friday. He had been called up to Baltimore just three days earlier from Triple-A Norfolk, where he was 4-3 with a save and a 4.03 ERA in 22 games, including 10 starts. In 12 relief appearances, he was 2-0 with a save and a 2.89 ERA. Bergesen also spent parts of three seasons with the Orioles from 2009-11 and went 17-24 with a 4.68 ERA in 83 games. In 24 career relief outings in the majors, he has a 5.36 ERA.

Bergesen is expected to take over the long-relief role that had belonged to Josh Collmenter, who moved into the rotation following the demotion of Trevor Bauer.
Shaw was one of the D-backs' best relievers early in the season but had struggled badly of late, with his ERA ballooning from 2.67 to 4.26 over his last six appearances. In his last two outings, the 24-year-old Shaw allowed seven earned runs on four hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings. For the season, he is 1-4 with two saves, a 4.26 ERA, 29 strikeouts and 15 walks in 43 games.

Shaw's seventh-inning role likely will be assumed by veteran Takashi Saito, who was activated from the disabled list on Saturday and made his first appearance of the season in the D-backs' win over the Astros. Saito had not previously pitched this year due to a strained calf muscle and then an illness that set him back during his rehab.
