D-backs claim lefty Escobar, designate Buschmann for assignment
PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks have claimed left-handed relief pitcher Edwin Escobar off waivers from the Boston Red Sox, optioned him to Triple-A Reno and designated pitcher Matt Buschmann for assignment.
Escobar, 24, has been unscored upon while pitching seven innings over three appearances for Triple-A Pawtucket this season. He was 3-3 with a 4.97 ERA for Pawtucket in 50 2/3 innings last year.
Escobar had been ranked the No. 2 prospect in the San Francisco Giants minor-league system in 2014 and was traded to the Red Sox along with Heath Hembree for starting pitcher Jake Peavy. He has pitched in the minor leagues for eight seasons, originally signing with the Texas Rangers in July 2008.
Buschmann, 32, made three appearances for the D-backs this season, giving up one run in 4 1/3 innings. He spent 10 seasons in the minor leagues before getting his first taste of major-league action when the Diamondbacks recalled him from Reno on April 8.
