D-backs announce first Chase Field twin bill

BY foxsports • July 16, 2012

The Diamondbacks announced Monday that the game scheduled for August 23 against the Miami Marlins will instead be played as the opener of a split day-night doubleheader on August 22, the first ever at Chase Field. The first game will start at 12:40 p.m. and the second game will be played at 6:40 p.m., as originally scheduled.

Both games will be televised by FOX Sports Arizona. Fans holding tickets to the August 23 game will be able to use those tickets for the 12:40 p.m. game on August 22.

The doubleheader was necessary in order to avoid playing more than 20 straight days without an open day, a violation of the league's collective bargaining agreement. The original schedule was approved by Major League Baseball, the MLB Players Association and the D-backs, but it included a stretch of 23 consecutive days with a game. The off day on August 23 -- in between home series against the Marlins and Padres -- puts the schedule in compliance, as the D-backs now will play nine consecutive days before the off day and 13 consecutive days after.

The doubleheader will be the first in a domed or retractable-roof stadium since Sept. 26, 2007, when the Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Indians played a makeup game at Safeco Field after a snowout in Cleveland.
