COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- The Columbus Crew has signed 28-year-old Costa Rican striker Jairo Arrieta to reinvigorate its offense.
Arrieta can play for the Crew after the transfer window opens on June 27, pending all paperwork. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The forward joins the Crew from Deportivo Saprissa of the Costa Rican First Division, where he scored 45 goals over the past five seasons and was the goal-scoring runner-up in the 2011 Campeonato de Invierno.
The 5-foot-9, 150-pounder played for Brujas F.C. before joining Saprissa in 2006, where he was a teammate of current Crew forward Olman Vargas. He helped the team win five Costa Rican first division championships.
