Coyotes open preseason with split-squad wins

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Keith Yandle and Jordan Szwarz scored short-handed goals to lead a Coyotes split squad to a 4-2 preseason victory over a Kings split squad Sunday night.

The Coyotes completed a sweep of the Kings in the pair of split-squad matchups after earning a 5-1 victory earlier Sunday in Los Angeles.

With Phoenix leading 3-2 early in the third period, Yandle converted a tic-tac-toe passing play from Martin Hanzal and Max Domi at 5:03.

Szwarz had cut the Coyotes' deficit to 2-1 when he scored a power-play goal. Mikkel Boedker tied it with a 5-on-3 goal at 1:09 of the second.

Coyotes captain Shane Doan made it 3-2 with a two-man advantage goal with 2:02 left in the second.

Brandon Kozun assisted on Tanner Pearson's goal on the Kings' first shot 51 seconds in to give Los Angeles an early lead, then beat goalie Mike Smith with a wrist shot at 2:39.

The game took a physical turn after a high hit by the Kings' Jordan Nolan on Coyotes defenseman Rusty Klesla, who was taken off the ice on a stretcher and was being examined at the arena afterward.

Nolan and Hanzal later scuffled and both received penalties, and Coyotes enforcer Paul Bissonnette left the bench to fight Nolan and received a game misconduct. The Kings' Daniel Carcillo and the Coyotes' Derek Morris also received misconducts in the scrum.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Brandon Yip had two goals and an assist, Gilbert Brule and Rob Klinkhammer scored power-play goals 4 1/2 minutes apart in the first period and David Rundblad had three assists to lead a Coyotes split squad to a 5-1 preseason victory over a Kings split squad Sunday night.

Guillaume Latendresse had a goal and two assists for the Coyotes. Thomas Greiss stopped all 15 shots he faced in the first two periods, and Louis Domingue made 10 saves in the third.

Slava Voynov scored the lone goal for the Kings, who got 16 saves from Mathieu Garon.
