IRVING – Anthony Spencer won't come out and say he's having a good year, but he's having a good year.
The Cowboys outside linebacker already has a career-best 6.5 sacks to go along with 57 total tackles, two forced fumbles and seven quarterback hurries.
The Cowboys placed their franchise tag on the 28-year-old former first-round pick during the offseason, meaning Spencer is playing on a one-year, $8.84 million contract. It's possible that if the Cowboys don't reach a long-term deal with Spencer this upcoming offseason, they could place another franchise tag on him for the 2013 season.
But Spencer says talks with his agent Jordan Woy are postponed until after the season has been completed.
"Whenever Jordan asks me about it, I just say I don't want to talk about it until the end of this season," Spencer said Monday. "I'm just going to keep playing. That's the only thing I can do. Even if I'm having a good year and he's telling me, ‘They're talking about this,' it's not going to change the way I'm going to play. So I'm just going to go out there and play and don't worry about it. When it comes around, it's going to come around."
Spencer, who missed two games with a strained pectoral muscle, has at least five more games to impress Jerry Jones and the Cowboys front office and get the long-term deal he covets. If he remains on his current pace, Spencer will finish with 88 tackles and 10 sacks, both career highs.
However, Spencer is trying not to think about that.
"I feel like you're only as good as your last game, so I really just try to go out there and play with that type of attitude and just keep playing every week regardless of the circumstances," he said. "You definitely can't get too far ahead of yourself in this game, cause it'll show."
