Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has thrown nine interceptions in his last two games at Cowboys Stadium with four coming in Sunday's 29-24 loss to the New York Giants. The franchise quarterback that has never tossed more than 19 picks in a season is on pace to throw 30 this year.
At 32, critics are wondering out loud if Romo should be the Cowboys' quarterback of the future.
Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Monday morning that he thinks Romo is the right guy going forward. Jones then pointed out that not all of Romo's turnovers are his fault. The executive VP was obviously referring to wide receivers making mistakes that contribute to those interceptions.
"Right now he's obviously going through a little bit of a tough stretch in terms of the turnovers," Jones said during his weekly interview on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. "He knows better than anybody that we can't have those.
"I think it's been said time and time again, and no one wants to point any fingers at anybody else and certainly Tony's not, it's all in house, but some of these turnovers aren't all his. We've got to do a better job of giving him the correct read and that type of thing but a lot of times quarterbacks throw interceptions and they're not always the quarterback's fault. We've got to do better than that.
"I think it would've been real easy for a quarterback who doesn't have a strong mental makeup to really struggle, but he brought our team back and gave us a lot of opportunities there at the end of the game to win the game. I think in the long haul Tony's going to be just fine."
Three of Romo's interceptions came in the first 17 minutes on Sunday, allowing the Giants to pull ahead 23-0. He was then exceptional in the third quarter, rushing for a one-yard score, completing 11-of-14 passes for 133 yards and finding John Phillips on a touchdown pass that put the Cowboys up 24-23.
When it was over, Romo had completed 36-of-62 passes for 437 yards.
