Cowboys' top pick will trim 'out of control' beard
IRVING, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys hosted their first three draft picks at the team's Valley Ranch practice facility on Saturday.
Offensive lineman Travis Frederick's beard was probably the most interesting topic. The Cowboys' first-round draft pick is sporting a beard that goes down to almost his chest.
When Jerry Jones introduced Frederick, tight end Gavin Escobar and wide receiver Terrance Williams to the media, the Cowboys owner and general manager mentioned that Frederick will be trimming his facial hair in the near future.
"It's definitely out of control, and this will be a good time to start fresh," Frederick said.
According to the 6-4, 312-pounder, he's been growing it for about 10 months.
"At Wisconsin it's kind of a thing you do when you play on the Wisconsin offensive line," Frederick said. "It shows a little bit of who we are as a group. I was going to cut it off at the end of the season, then I chose not to. I was going to cut it off after the Rose Bowl, and then I didn't. But it's getting cut off."
Frederick likely will line up at center this season, meaning his relationship with Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is significant. Frederick hasn't talked to Romo yet, but they do have something in common — both have lived in Wisconsin.
"I'm excited to get a chance to play with Tony," Frederick said. "His hometown is about 20 minutes away from my hometown, so it's kind of a cool story there. He's really a great guy and a great quarterback, and I'm excited to get a chance to learn from him and learn about reading defenses and things like that."
