Cowboys seeking holiday magic to get home field advantage

Published Dec. 23, 2014 2:42 p.m. ET

If you're like owner Jerry Jones, you're still holding out hope the Cowboys can get home field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs.

But for that to happen, it would take a post-Christmas miracle: a win over the Redskins, a Cardinals loss or tie AND a tie between the Lions and Packers. Ties in the NFL almost never happen.

Well, there was a tie this year between the Panthers and Bengals. And one the year before between the Vikings and Packers. And the year before that between the Rams and 49ers.

But it's still rare to see a tie in today's NFL, even with the new overtime rules that give both teams a possession if a touchdown isn't scored on the opening drive.

So if you'd like to see the Cowboys clinch home field advantage, keep your fingers crossed and leave a little something extra with Santa's cookies on Christmas Eve.
