Cowboys gets some help for thin linebacker corps

The Dallas Cowboys, aka Team Hamstring, may get some help at its thinned-out linebacker position from a couple of different sources.

Both Sean Lee and Justin Durant suffered hamstring injuries in Sunday's loss to New Orleans that are expected to keep them out 3-4 weeks.

One of possible replacements is defensive end Kyle Wilber, who was practicing with the linebackers during Wednesday's light, bye-week practice.

Wilber had been an outside linebacker when the Cowboys were in a 3-4 system. After switching  to the 4-3 this season, Wilber was converted to defensive end, although not without some debate, according to coach Jason Garrett.

"We chose to put him at defensive end, but there was a lot of discussion about that because he does have some athletic ability to play off the ball. You see that when he runs down on kickoffs and plays throughout special teams," Garrett said.

"We felt like those were the things he was best suited to do, putting his hand on the ground and playing  defensive end, but he has some of the other things that allow him to be a little more flexible."

Garrett indicated the move to linebacker is something the staff is still considering at this point.

Some more conventional relief at linebacker came in the return to practice of linebacker DeVonte Holloman, who has been out with a neck injury.

"He certainly made a very favorable impression on us early on in camp, both as a special teams guy and when he had opportunities to play linebacker," Garrett said. "He was doing good things before the injury and he will certainly have a role once he gets back healthy and ready to go again."
