Cowboys being careful with WR Austin's hamstring injury
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said receiver Miles Austin is "not quite himself" despite returning from a hamstring injury two games ago.
Austin has zero catches since the injury, which caused him to miss two games. He practiced last Wednesday but was held out of Thursday and Friday practices to keep him fresh, Garrett said.
However, if not for injuries at other positions Garrett indicated the Austin probably wouldn't have suited up for Sunday's win at Philadelphia.
"We had a lot of other injuries prior to the ballgame that allowed us to dress Miles, regardless," Garrett said Monday. "He warmed up well, so we gave him a chance to play in the ballgame. I thought he did fine. He's not quite himself."
Austin has had notoriously troublesome hamstrings, but the Cowboys have been able to fill his role with production from rookie Terrance Williams and second-year man Cole Beasley.
Before he was injured, Austin had 15 catches for 125 yards in the first three games, including a 10-catch performance in the opening win over the Giants.
"He really had a good start to the season and had some explosiveness and quickness to him, was very productive for us, and then he tweaked that hamstring a couple of weeks ago and hasn't really been the same," Garrett said. "So we've got to make sure and get him healthy and hopefully we can do that and have some other guys play for him until he's ready to really roll."
Williams is third on the team with 24 catches and three touchdowns, including one in Sunday's win over the Eagles. He's also averaging 15.8 yards a catch.
Beasley has 18 catches and a touchdown and has proven to be a reliable possession receiver.
