CLEVELAND -- With Yan Gomes still feeling the effects from a concussion, the Indians placed him on the seven-day disabled list retroactive to Thursday.
Gomes was hit in the side of the mask by a ball that deflected off Kurt Suzuki during the fifth inning at Minnesota.
Manager Terry Francona said Gomes did some activities on Friday but that it was better to err on the side of caution because Gomes was still experiencing some concussion-related symptoms.
"This isn't something you can rush through and it is not something like a hamstring where you can nurse it along. You have to adhere to the regulations because you can't let a player willing to play do something he shouldn't do," Francona said.
Roberto Perez will get his second straight start tonight against Houston. Perez, who is batting .256, went 0 for 3 and had a throwing error during the ninth inning of Friday's 5-1 loss that led to the go-ahead run scoring.
Carlos Santana will serve as the backup tonight but before the game the Indians acquired Chris Gimenez from the Rangers for future considerations. Gimenez began his career with Cleveland after being drafted in the 19th round in 2004.
Gimenez played 74 games for the Tribe in 2009-10 and batted .160 with four home runs and 15 RBI. He has also played with Tampa Bay and Seattle. This season Gimenez batted .262 with 11 RBI and 13 runs scored in 34 games.
INJURY UPDATES: Ryan Raburn begins a rehab stint with Columbus tonight. The plan is for him to play seven games with a mix of right field and designated hitter. Raburn was placed on the DL on Aug. 18 due to right wrist soreness.
Jason Giambi (left knee) will also play in some rehab games next week in hopes that he could be ready when rosters are expanded on Sept. 1.
David Murphy (oblique) did 40 dry swings as his activity ramps up.
