CJ Wilson to have season-ending shoulder surgery

CJ Wilson's 2016 season is over before it even started. And his Angels career might be going with it.

After experiencing shoulder pain that resulted in setbacks dating back to spring training, the Angels have confirmed Wilson will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery. Wilson last took the mound for the Angels in late July of 2015.

A free agent at the end of this season, Wilson told MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez that he intends to pitch next season. As an Angel, Wilson did receive an all-star nod in his first season with the team but hasn't lived up to his $77.5 million contract and struggled with injuries the last two seasons.

In addition to Wilson being out for the season, the Angels also recently announced starting pitcher Andrew Heaney would require Tommy John surgery that will keep him out until the start of the 2018 season. The team is still employing a wait-and-see approach with starter Garrett Richards, who also may need Tommy John surgery.
