Churchill Downs plans to resume racing Friday after two cancellations

Churchill Downs is set to resume live racing on Friday after two consecutive days of cancellations because of a frozen track.

Track president Kevin Flanery said Thursday that a 10-race card will be run.

The one-mile dirt oval will be open for training Friday, when the forecast calls for a high of 38 degrees with sunshine. The average temperature in Louisville this time of year is in the upper 50s.

An early wintery blast of 3 inches of snow Monday, along with frigid temperatures, combined to freeze the track and force the cancellations, which were the first for that reason since Nov. 23-24, 1970.

Churchill plans to make up the 20 cancelled races by adding races to its remaining programs before the fall meet ends Nov. 30.
