Chuck Miller to receive first-ever John C. Argue award
LOS ANGELES (March 12, 2012) -The late Chuck Miller will be honoredduring the seventh annual LA Sports Awards, presented by AT&T U-verse as thefirst recipient of the new John C. Argue Award.
The award, named after the Founding Chairman of the Los Angeles Sports Council,was created in order to properly recognize individuals who have made outstandingcontributions to the business of sports in the Los Angeles area, as did John C. Arguehimself. Among John's many accomplishments, he was best known as the personmost responsible for bringing the historic 1984 Olympic Games to Los Angeles.The LA Sports Awards, to be held on March 15 at Club Nokia at L.A. Live, were createdby the L.A. Sports Council to celebrate the greatest moments of the year in sports inthe Los Angeles/Orange County area.
As the long-time Chairman and CEO of Avery Dennison, which he transformed into aglobal giant, Chuck was one of Los Angeles' outstanding business leaders. His othergreat passion was sports and he found opportunities to apply his business acumen tothe world of sports in significant and creative ways, starting with the '84 Olympics.In the years leading to the 1984 Games, Chuck served on the Los Angeles OlympicOrganizing Committee's executive committee. After 1984, Chuck helped establishboth the LA84 Foundation, which supports a wide array of youth sports programsacross Southern California, and the Los Angeles Sports Council as its vice chairman.In recent years Chuck broadened his sporting horizons through his support for thedevelopment of Staples Center as well as the Rose Bowl renovation project, whichlaunched in 2010. Sadly, Chuck died in November 2011. His wife, Carolyn, willaccept the award on his behalf.
In addition to the Argue Award presentation, the ceremony also will feature acountdown of the Top 10 moments for 2011 along with the naming of the Sportsman,Sportswoman, Coach, and Sports Executive of the Year.
