Chris Paul and Blake Griffin selected to USA Basketball pool
In the midst of a strong season for the Clippers, guard Chris Paul and forward Blake Griffin were named to USA Basketball’s initial men's national team roster for 2014-2016.
Paul and Griffin were among 28 players selected Thursday to compete for 12 spots for the World Cup in Spain and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil. The World Cup begins in August.
Paul, who is currently sidelined by a separated shoulder, already has two Olympic gold medals with Team USA in 2008 and 2012. It’s unlikely he will play this summer, but he’s expected to take part in the 2016 Games.
Griffin was originally named to the 2012 U.S Olympic team, but was forced to bow out because of an injury during training.
Paul, who leads the NBA with an average of 11.2 assists, isn't expected back until mid-February. Griffin is averaging a team-high 22.6 points for the Clippers, who lead the Pacific Division with a 29-15 record.
