Chris Johnson returns to Cardinals with 1-year deal

Published Mar. 17, 2016 4:00 p.m. ET

Running back Chris Johnson will return to the Arizona Cardinals for the 2016 season.

Johnson was one of general manager Steve Keim's top free-agent signings of 2015, signing a bargain-priced one-year deal and rushing for 814 yards in 11 games before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

He expressed an interest in returning, but first tested the free agency waters, visiting Miami on Wednesday before opting to return to Arizona. He is likely to split time in the backfield with David Johnson, who came on strong in the later stages of his rookie season after Chris Johnson was injured.

Chris Johnson has rushed for 9,442 yards and 54 touchdowns in his eight seasons as a pro -- six with Tennessee and one each with the New York Jets and Cardinals.
