Cavs Report: Boobie on the block?

Daniel Gibson played a total of five minutes on the Cavaliers’ five-game swing through the Western Conference, and there’s a feeling around the league that his days in Cleveland are reaching an end.

The 6-foot-2 shooting guard has spent all seven NBA seasons with the Cavs and has been a regular contributor off the bench. At least, Gibson has until recently.

An assortment of injuries has caused Gibson to miss 14 of the Cavs’ 42 games (he also sat out Monday’s practice while sick). Since Gibson has returned, his spot in coach Byron Scott’s rotation appears to have been filled by 6-7 waiver wire acquisition Shaun Livingston.

That, coupled with an expiring contract, has led to speculation the Cavs could move Gibson to a more suitable situation for both parties come the Feb. 21 trading deadline.

Gibson, 26, is averaging 7.2 points, but shooting just 37 percent -- the second-worst of his career. Last season, he missed 31 games and shot a career-low 35 percent.

If the Cavs are unable to trade Gibson, sources have indicated they’re likely to let him walk via free agency this summer.

Gibson was selected in the second round (No. 42 overall) of the 2006 draft.

Jones to Charge

On the same day the Cavs announced Anderson Varejao will miss the rest of the season, rookie power forward Kevin Jones was sent to the Canton Charge of the D-League.

This has also led to speculation that the Cavs may be creating room for another big man but, right now, speculation is all it is.

Jones has appeared in 15 games for the Cavs and is averaging 1.9 points and 1.5 rebounds in 9 minutes per night. With the Charge, he’s at 23.6 points and 12.6 rebounds in five games.

The Cavs still have a roster spot available after waiving forward Samardo Samuels earlier this month.

Dribbles

• Charge center Micheal Eric is one player to monitor. Eric is 6-11 undrafted rookie. He’s big, athletic, attended training camp with the Cavs, and has collected 14 rebounds in back-to-back games with Canton.

• Also, Charge big man Arinze Onuaku is ranked as the ninth-best D-League prospect by the league’s official website. Onuaku is 6-9 and plays both center and power forward. He is currently injured (knee bruise), but averaging 14.3 points and 11.5 rebounds when healthy. He shoots 56 percent from the floor but just 51 percent from the free-throw line.

• The Cavs (10-32) return home to face Boston on Tuesday. The Celtics have lost five straight, but beat the Cavs on Dec. 19 in Boston. That was the first game missed by Varejao after injuring his knee.
