Cavs exercise options on Irving, Thompson
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- To no one’s surprise, the Cavaliers have exercised the third-year options on point guard Kyrie Irving and power Tristan Thompson, general manager Chris Grant said Friday.
Both players are entering their second seasons. Irving, the reigning NBA rookie of the year, averaged 18.5 points on 47 shooting last season. He also passed for 5.4 assists in 30.5 minutes per game.
Thompson averaged 8.2 points and 6.5 rebounds in 23.7 minutes. He was selected to the All-Rookie Second Team.
“Kyrie and Tristan exemplify what we want to be as a team and franchise, both as players and as people,” Grant said in a written statement. “They are dedicated, hard-working, talented individuals and we’re looking forward to their continued growth and success here.”
The Cavs open the season Oct. 30 vs. Washington at The Q.
