INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- The Cavaliers have claimed guard Shaun Livingston off waivers from the Washington Wizards, general manager Chris Grant said Tuesday.
“If (Livingston) has anything left, he could help them off the bench,” an opposing scout told FOX Sports Ohio. “Question is, does he have anything left?”
To create room for Livingston on the roster, the Cavs waived guard Donald Sloan. Their roster now stands at 15.
Livingston, a 6-foot-7 combo guard, is in his eighth NBA season. He was waived by Washington on Sunday, and the Cavs had until 5 p.m. Tuesday to claim him.
Livingston was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2004 draft. He entered the draft straight out of Peoria (Ill.) Central High School, and was named co-MVP of the ’04 McDonald’s All-Star Game.
Livingston suffered a severe knee injury in February 2007 -- tearing his anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament and lateral meniscus. He missed the entire ’07-08 season, and has since had stints with Miami, Oklahoma City, Charlotte, Milwaukee and two with Washington.
He played in 58 of 66 games with the Bucks last year, averaging 5.5 points on 47 percent shooting and 2.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists. Livingston appeared in 17 games (four starts) with the Wizards this season, averaging 3.7 points.
Sloan, signed late last season, has played just seven minutes combined in the Cavs’ previous four games. Overall, he has appeared in 53 games (11 starts) since the Cavs called him up from the D-League’s Erie BayHawks, compiling averages of 5.0 points and 2.7 assists.
The Cavs return to action following a brief Christmas break Wednesday at Washington. Starting center Anderson Varejao (knee contusion) did not make the trip.
