Ace Chris Carpenter will face hitters for the first time Tuesday, a couple of days later than the rest of the pitchers in camp.
Carpenter is working on a special schedule this spring after throwing a career-high 273 1/3 innings last season.
Manager Mike Matheny said the club has it written "in pencil" that the veteran will be the Opening Day starter on April 4, but that nothing had been set in stone yet.
