For the first time since September of 2000, the Indians have back-to-back American League Players of the Week.
In what should come as no surprise, Carlos Santana received the honor on Monday after he batted .556 (15 for 27) with three doubles, six home runs and 10 RBI. He had multi-homer games on Friday and Sunday against the Royals, becoming the first Indians player to do that as a catcher, designated hitter and first baseman. He has homered in three straight games, matching a career high from 2011, and five of the past six.
The Indians lead the Majors with 30 homers in July. Santana's eight homers are tied with the Cubs' Anthony Rizzo for the most this month.
Hopefully Santana has better luck than the past two Tribe players who have been honored. Michael Brantley suffered a concussion on a play at second base on June 16, which is the day he received his award, while Jason Kipnis is 2 for 26 since he was named last Monday.
Manny Ramirez and Bartolo Colon were the last Cleveland players to be honored in consecutive weeks (Sept. 17 and 24, 2000).
