ST. LOUIS -- Remember Marc Rzepczynski? Left-handed reliever who was struggling to the point that the Cardinals had to send him to Triple-A Memphis? He's back.

The Cardinals announced Thursday they have recalled Rzepczynski from Memphis. He replaces right-handed pitcher Carlos Martinez, who was optioned to Memphis after their win over Philadelphia last night.

Rzepczynski, 27, opened the season in St. Louis and appeared in nine games, allowing 13 hits and seven earned runs in eight innings (7.88 ERA) before being optioned to Triple A on April 29.

He appeared to work out some of the kinks in Memphis. Rzepczynski pitched in 32 games, posting a 1-2 mark with a 3.07 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 44 innings. He allowed just one home run and 18 walks and limited opposing left-handed hitters to a .185 average.

Martinez, 21, was the Cardinals' Minor League Pitcher of the Month in June. He has made eight starts this season at Memphis, going 3-2 with a 1.98 ERA. He has had two stints in St. Louis this season, striking out 11 batters in 11 1/3 innings.
