LOS ANGELES (AP) -- St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman injured his right knee while taking a throw at first base during the second inning of Saturday night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Berkman stretched out to take the throw from shortstop Rafael Furcal, and kept his left foot anchored on the bag for the third out of the inning. Berkman hopped a few feet before slumping to the ground.

Matt Carpenter replaced Berkman at first the next inning.

The switch-hitting Berkman, the NL comeback player of the year in 2011, has played in only 13 games this season, batting .333 with a homer and four RBIs. He came off the disabled list last Sunday after being sidelined for 21 games because of a strained left calf.
