KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The slumping St. Louis Cardinals offense is about to get a big boost.
More than two months since injuring his right shoulder during a crash with the center field wall, outfielder Jon Jay has been activated from the disabled list and will likely be in the starting lineup Friday night against the Kansas City Royals.
Utility infielder and outfielder Matt Carpenter has been activated from the disabled list as well, providing the Cardinals with a pair of key bats they’ve lacked the past few weeks.
Rookie first baseman Matt Adams and speedy outfielder Adron Chambers were optioned back to Triple-A Memphis to make room for them on the roster.
Jay, who initially only missed about a week before landing on the disabled list on May 16, was hitting .343 and had a .395 on-base percentage in 27 games before going down.
The left-handed hitting Jay actually hit .339 in 15 games after suffering the shoulder injury before the pain forced him to the disabled list. His return could be a huge lift for a Cardinals offense that has surprisingly struggled to score runs the past two weeks.
Carpenter was hitting .288 in 39 games with three home runs and 20 RBI before suffering an oblique strain on May 22.
The Cardinals scored just seven runs in a three-game series in Detroit earlier this week and scored seven runs in five games during their last homestand.
