Cardinals' Wainwright to see doctor in St. Louis for abdominal pain

At least it's not Adam Wainwright's right elbow. At least it's so early that spring training hasn't even officially started for the Cardinals. And at least the Cardinals were planning a light workload for Wainwright this spring.

Still, no matter how you look at it, having to send their ace to St. Louis because of abdominal pain is not how the Cardinals would prefer to begin spring training.

But according to a report on stltoday.com Tuesday afternoon, Wainwright is headed to St. Louis to be checked out by Dr. Michael Brunt at Washington University after experiencing abdominal soreness.

General manager John Mozeliak said the club's level of concern is "medium at this point," stltoday.com reported.

The Cardinals are scheduled to hold their first official full-squad workout on Wednesday that will include live batting practice sessions. Wainwright was not expected to be among the pitchers to throw one of the sessions, according to the club.

He figures to be held out of heavy work for a while now. Abdominal injuries typically take at least two weeks to recover from and the club already had talked about limiting Wainwright's work after undergoing an offseason elbow cleanup. Wainwright has not spent any time on the disabled list during his career because of an abdominal injury.

Cardinals pitchers took a day off from throwing Tuesday, the fifth day of workouts since pitchers and catchers reported last week. Wainwright did not participate in any of the workouts Tuesday morning.
