Cardinals recall outfielder Pham, ship LHP Cooney to Triple A
ST. LOUIS -- Tommy Pham is getting a long-awaited chance with the big club.
The Cardinals announced Pham's addition to the roster prior to Friday night's game against the Padres. Left-handed starter Tim Cooney was shipped down to Triple A.
Pham, 27, was batting .338 (27 for 80) with five homers and 21 RBI in 24 games for the Redbirds. After beginning the year on the disabled list (left quadriceps), Pham joined Memphis on June 6 and has produced a .625 slugging percentage and a .402 on-base percentage while primarily playing center field.
The right-handed hitting Pham was a 16th round (496th player overall) draft selection by the Cardinals in 2006 out of Durango High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pham, who has homered in each of his past two games at Memphis, was batting .320 (8 for 25) with runners in scoring position.
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Pham appeared in six games for the Cardinals last September, going hitless in his two at-bats. He will wear uniform number 60.
