Cardinals promote Gomber from Memphis, send Flaherty down

Published Apr. 29, 2018 9:59 a.m. ET

A day after making a spot start for the St. Louis Cardinals, top prospect Jack Flaherty is back in Triple-A Memphis, replaced by Austin Gomber, who is coming off a record-setting performance on the mound.

The Cardinals optioned Flaherty to Memphis after his start Saturday, when he allowed three runs over five innings and took the loss to the Pirates. Flaherty had previously gotten a no-decision while striking out nine batters in five innings against Milwaukee in the first week of the season, again while Adam Wainwright was on the disabled list.

The Cardinals recalled Gomber, 24, from Memphis. The left-hander set a record when he struck out 16 batters April 23 at Iowa. Gomber, the Cardinals' Minor League co-Pitcher of the Year in 2015, is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA in four starts (25 2/3 innings) for the Redbirds.

Gomber will make his major league debut in his first appearance for St. Louis.
