Cardinals open spot for Peralta by optioning Wong to Memphis

ST. LOUIS -- He could always be back in time, but at this point Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong likely won't be around for Kolten Wong Hawaiian Print Jersey night on June 17.
The Cardinals optioned Wong to Triple-A Memphis after Sunday night's 6-3 win over the Giants. The move opens up space on the team's 25-man active roster for the anticipated activation off the disabled list of infielder Jhonny Peralta.
With rookie Aledmys Diaz playing consistently well at shortstop, Peralta is expected to start at third while Matt Carpenter moves over to second base, where Wong has played only sporadically this year.
Wong, 25, batted .222 with one homer and five RBIs in 49 games (35 starts) for the Cardinals this season. He signed a five-year, $25.5 million contract extension in the offseason after batting .262 with 11 homers and 61 RBIs in 2015.
Peralta suffered ligament damage in his left thumb in a March 5 spring training game and underwent surgery. He appears to be ready to return to big-league action after a nine-game injury rehabilitation assignment that included five games at Single-A Peoria (3 for 13), one game at Double-A Springfield (0 for 2) and three games at High-A Palm Beach (3 for 11).
