Calvin Johnson embraces commercial character
ALLEN PARK, Mich. – The alter-ego character of Calvin Johnson’s new TV commercial seemingly came to life during a news conference Thursday at the Detroit Lions’ practice facility.
Johnson, the Detroit Lions’ record-breaking wide receiver, had answered a few questions on his health and football before getting asked about the recently-released Nike spot that also stars rapper/actor Sean Combs, a.k.a P. Diddy.
“I think ‘Johnson’ should handle the rest of this,” the real-life Calvin Johnson said during his weekly session with the local media. “I ain’t even supposed to be up here. It’s time to go.”
Johnson walked away laughing before turning around and coming back to finish the news conference.
In the commercial, P. Diddy plays the stand-in role of “Johnson,” handling off-the-field obligations with the media and fans so that “Calvin” can concentrate solely on football and avoid all outside distractions.
