California Chrome is heading back to the United States without having competed in a race in Britain.

The Art Sherman-trained 4-year-old, winner of the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, has been pulled out of the July 4 Coral-Eclipse Stakes.

The horse had already been ruled out of Royal Ascot last week because of a bruised foot.

Trainer Rae Guest, who has had California Chrome at his stables in Newmarket since March, says the owners have run out of time to get him ready for the Eclipse.

Guest says in the Racing Post that "the decision has been made to send him home."

California Chrome's last appearance was a runner-up finish at the Dubai World Cup in March.
