TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford missed practice Monday because of an undisclosed medical procedure performed that morning and will be out for what coach Lovie Smith is calling a ''short period of time.''

''So we will of course keep Jeff in our prayers and all of that, and he should be OK,'' Smith said.

There is no timetable for Tedford's return. Smith said Monday afternoon that Tedford, 52, was resting comfortably and that more information will be available later. Tedford, a long-time college coach who led California from 2002 to 2012, is in his first season as an NFL assistant.

If Tedford can't call plays during the Bucs' preseason finale against the Washington Redskins on Thursday night at Raymond James Stadium, Smith said the whole offensive staff would come together to perform the duty.

''We have a coordinator, yes,'' Smith said. ''From there, yes, there's always a backup plan. There's a backup plan if I'm not here. But beyond that right now, with what we can tell you, everything keeps going.''
