Bruise holds Jennings out of practice

GREEN BAY, Wis. — As the Packers put on pads Saturday for the first time this season on Day 3 of training camp practices, there were a few important players missing.

Wide receiver Greg Jennings was out with an elbow bruise, an injury he suffered during Friday's practice. But coach Mike McCarthy wasn't too concerned about Jennings' status going forward.

"I would say it's day-to-day," McCarthy said. "With us being off (Sunday), I'd think he'd be healthy for Monday."

Linebacker Desmond Bishop is still out with a calf injury after failing his pre-training camp physical. Bishop, who led the Packers in tackles last season and was second in sacks, provided an update on his status following practice.

"I'm feeling good," he said. "I'm working my way back to it. Timetable, not really sure. I'm going to kind of leave that up to the docs to figure it out."

Bishop missed three games last season with calf injuries but added that this latest aggravation was in a "different location" and is "not as bad as it was last year."

Bishop also made it clear that this injury will not keep him out from the start of the regular season.

Also absent was tight end Jermichael Finley, who suffered a concussion during Thursday's non-padded practice and has been out the past two days. McCarthy is "hopeful" Finley will be cleared in time for Monday morning's practice.

"Jermichael Finley's going through the concussion protocol that's in place," McCarthy said. "I know there will be some testing potentially, probably (Sunday). We'll see how that goes."

Undrafted rookie offensive tackle Mike McCabe was injured during one-on-one drills and had to be carted off the field. The injury appeared quite serious, but other than mentioning that McCabe "hurt his hip," McCarthy didn't know the extent of it yet.

Defensive end Anthony Hargrove, who is suspended for the first eight games of the regular season for his role in the New Orleans Saints bounty program, missed his second consecutive practice for personal reasons.

"(He) had a travel issue (Friday) night, but we expect him, if the travel issue doesn't continue, to be back today," McCarthy said.

Wide receiver Shaky Smithson (chest bruise) and tight end Brandon Bostick (finger) also had to sit out Saturday's practice.

The rest of the injury report remained the same, with fullback John Kuhn, tight end Andrew Quarless, linebacker Frank Zombo and offensive tackle Derek Sherrod also continuing to miss practice.

Muir pushing for roster spot: Daniel Muir is one of several defensive linemen trying to stand out enough to grab a spot at the back end of the Packers' line rotation.

But Muir may have an edge as he continues doing well on special teams. He is currently on the first-string kickoff return team, as well as on the field goal block and field goal protection units.

"Every opportunity you get is an opportunity to make it," Muir told FOXSportsWisconsin.com. "You just have to take the opportunity and try to do the most with it."

Muir, who spent the past four years with the Indianapolis Colts, is one of 12 defensive linemen with the Packers in training camp. With B.J. Raji, Jerel Worthy, Ryan Pickett, Mike Daniels and C.J. Wilson all seemingly locks to make Green Bay's regular-season roster, Muir is competing with Hargrove, Mike Neal, Johnny Jones, Jarius Wynn, Lawrence Guy and Phillip Merling for the final couple spots.

With those seven players all battling it out, Muir is trying to stay focused and not look over his shoulder at the rest of the group during practice.

"I don't look at the roster; that will just torment you," Muir said. "That's the wrong thing to do. I'd be lying if I said it doesn't come to my mind, but I don't sit around looking at it."

On defense, Muir has gotten some snaps as a defensive tackle in the nickel packages and as a nose tackle in the 3-4 base packages.

"I've never played in the 3-4, but I'm learning it," Muir said. "I'm trying to learn fast and do this thing right."
