HUDDERSFIELD, England (AP) A youth team player for British rugby league side Huddersfield Giants has died in hospital after being hurt during a match.

Ronan Costello had been on a life-support machine since being airlifted to hospital from an under-19s game he was playing against Salford on Saturday. The match was abandoned when the 17-year-old Costello was hurt.

Huddersfield announced Costello's death on Tuesday. It hasn't been disclosed what injuries he sustained.

Costello's family said in a statement, ''We are absolutely devastated to lose Ronan so tragically and suddenly,'' adding that ''he was passionate about rugby and rugby was a big part of his life. We acknowledge that this was a tragic accident.''
