Brewers sign veteran catcher Paul Phillips
The Brewers Wednesday added another catcher to the fold, signing veteran Paul Phillips to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. Phillips hit .237 with three home runs and 24 RBI in 78 games with Class AAA Columbus last season and has played 91 major league games with Kansas City, the Chicago White Sox and Colorado.
Milwaukee also claimed infielder Jeff Bianchi off waivers from the Cubs. Bianchi hit .259 with 48 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 119 games last season with the Royals' Class AA affiliate, Northwest Arkansas, after after missing all of 2010 recovering from "Tommy John" surgery performed during spring training.
Bianchi was waived by the Royals in December and claimed by Chicago.
The Brewers now have 39 players on their 40-man roster.
