The Milwaukee Brewers have placed first baseman Lyle Overbay on the paternity list, recalling utility man Elian Herrera from Triple-A Nashville to fill his roster spot.
Overbay's wife, Sarah, is expecting the couple's fifth child in the coming days. According to MLB rules, the 37-year-old can stay on the paternity list for up to three days. The Brewers begin a four-game series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates on Thursday night.
After losing out on the final bench spot, Herrera is hitting .250 with three doubles and two triples in 12 games for Nashville this season. Herrera hit .240 with a home run and eight RBI this spring, starting fast but fading late.
Herrera has played in 71 big-league games with the Los Angeles Dodgers, appearing in 67 games in 2012 and four games in 2013. He's a career .251 hitter with a home run and 17 RBI in 222 career plate appearances.
Splitting time with Mark Reynolds at first base, Overbay is 2-for-20 (.100 batting average) with three RBI on the season.
