With the waiver trade deadline approaching Saturday, teams usually place multiple players on revocable trade waivers to test the market.
According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Milwaukee Brewers placed Yovani Gallardo on revocable trade waivers Monday, testing the trade market on the 27-year-old right-hander.
Gallardo was injured the day before the non-waiver trade deadline and was placed on the disabled list on July 31 with a strained left hamstring.
In posting back-to-back quality starts since coming off the disabled list on Aug. 17, Gallardo has increased his trade value by pitching well and proving he's healthy.
A team can claim a player placed on revocable trade waivers, but the Brewers have the right to pull Gallardo back and keep him with no penalty if the two teams can't work out a trade in the 48-hour window.
Gallardo is still unlikely to be traded mainly because the Brewers control him for two more seasons. He's set to make $11.25 million next season and the team holds a $13 million team option for 2015.
Though he's struggled to a 4.61 ERA in 25 starts this season, Gallardo has been one of the more consistent pitchers in the National League over the last five seasons. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin would probably have to be blown away by an offer to move a pitcher under the age of 30 that's under control for more than one more season.
Earlier in the month, the Boston Globe reported left-handed reliever Michael Gonzalez was placed on trade waivers. With how he's struggled of late -- 8.10 ERA in August -- the Brewers would probably just let Gonzalez go to any claiming team.
Rosenthal reported Kyle Lohse was claimed by Atlanta earlier in August, but the Brewers decided to keep the right-hander and will revisit the idea of a trade in the offseason.
