Brewers keep Roenicke as manager, fire two coaches
Milwaukee Brewers manager Ron Roenicke will return for the 2015 season, the club announced Friday afternoon.
Not all members of the coaching staff survived the team's late-season collapse, as hitting coach Johnny Narron and first base/infield coach Garth Iorg were dismissed.
"Over the course of the last few weeks, we have evaluated the work of Ron and his coaches and believe that this is the best course of action to take," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said in a release. "We appreciate the work that Johnny and Garth did for us through the years, and moves like these are never easy to make. We have already started reviewing our player personnel and will continue to address the factors that led to our disappointing finish to the season."
There was some speculation Roenicke's job could be in jeopardy after the Brewers lost 22 of their last 31 games to become the fourth team since 1969 to miss the postseason after leading a division for at least 150 days.
Owner Mark Attanasio and Melvin did not commit either way on Roenicke at their year-end press conference during the final series of the season, saying they would meet in the near future to determine the skipper's fate.
Roenicke's club option for the 2015 season was exercised during spring training, while a club option for 2016 was added.
The 58-year-old is 304-265 in four years as manager of the Brewers, recording winning seasons in three of his four seasons in Milwaukee. But the Brewers have failed to make the postseason since 2011, when Roenicke led Milwaukee to a 96-66 record, a division championship and a berth in the National League Championship Series.
Milwaukee's offense disappeared down the stretch, as the Brewers averaged just 2.7 runs per game in September, including scoring two runs or fewer in 17 of their last 31 games. The struggles of the offense all but forced the Brewers to make a change at hitting coach.
Narron was named as hitting coach in November of 2011, replacing Dale Sveum after he was hired as the manager of the Chicago Cubs. Before joining the Brewers, Narron spent four seasons on the major-league coaching staff with the Texas Rangers, serving as a special assignment coach in 2008 and as the assistant hitting coach in 2011. Narron managed rookie-level Helena in the Brewers organization in 2004 and was the hitting coach with the same club in 2003 and 2006. He also served as the hitting coach for Class-A Brevard County in 2005.
A member of Roenicke's original staff with the Brewers, Iorg served four seasons as Milwaukee's first-base coach and was also in charge of coaching the team's infielders. He spent 2007-10 as the Brewers roving infield coordinator and served as Milwaukee's third-base coach when Sveum took over as interim manager late in the 2008 season.
Pitching coach Rick Kranitz, bench coach Jerry Narron, third base coach Ed Sedar, outfield coach John Shelby, bullpen coach Lee Tunnell and coach Mike Guerrero will return to the coaching staff in 2015.
