Braves' Gosselin to have thumb surgery; Garcia promoted
The Braves have placed Phil Gosselin on the 15-day disabled list after he was diagnosed with a fracture in his left thumb, which will require surgery, the team announced Monday.
With Gosselin out, Atlanta has promoted infielder Adonis Garcia from Triple-A Gwinnett.
Gosselin was injured during the third inning Sunday against the Marlins when, playing third base, he made a diving stop on Adeiny Hechavarria's grounder and landed awkwardly. Gosselin finished the inning before he was replaced.
Gosselin has appeared in 20 games and was making his fourth start. He is hitting .316/.350/.421 with four doubles, two RBI and two steals.
Garcia, 30, is second in the International League in hits (47), doubles (11) and batting average (.351) and has a team-high 21 RBI. The right-hander has never appeared in the majors.
