A five-year-old boy was hit by a police car as he walked to soccer practice with his mother Monday night in Staten Island, N.Y., police said.

The youngster had exited a parked car near Mahoney Park when the police cruiser, responding to a gunshot call, sent him flying into a fence, witnesses said.

"He must have gone 30 feet [9m] before a fence stopped him and he was laying there bleeding from his head," said a witness, Wanda Ortiz.

He was rushed to the Richmond University Hospital with minor cuts and bruises, authorities said.

Cops would not say how fast the car was going, but said its lights were flashing and the siren was sounding.
