CINCINNATI -- The Bengals signed fourth-year linebacker Chris Carter to their 53-man roster Wednesday, filling the spot left open when Jayson DiManche was put on injured reserve this week.

Carter, a fourth-year player from Fresno State, was a fifth-round pick of Pittsburgh in 2011 and played in 29 games with four starts for the Steelers the last three seasons before being waived at the end this past preseason. He signed with Indianapolis and played one game with the Colts this season before being waived on Oct. 6. He has primarily been a special teams player in his career.

Carter was practicing Wednesday as the Bengals prepare to face his former team, the Steelers, on Sunday.

DiManche, a second-year player, suffered a broken forearm in the fourth quarter of last Sunday's 14-13 win at Tampa Bay. He had seven tackles on defense as well as three tackles and forced fumble on special teams.

Carter was the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2010 when he led Fresno State with 11 sacks and 16.5 tackles for loss. That season included a three-sack game against the University of Cincinnati in the first game of the season, a 28-14 Fresno State win.
