Bairstow steadies England ship, reach 205-5 vs. India

MOHALI, India (AP) England steadied after a top-order wobble and reached 205-5 at tea on Saturday, the opening day of the third test against India.

After winning the toss, England lost only one wicket in the first hour but then three in the latter part of the opening session to be in trouble at 92-4 for lunch.

Jonny Bairstow helped to get England back into a competitive position, sharing good partnerships with Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler as the tourists made swift progress with 113 runs in the afternoon session.

At tea, Bairstow was unbeaten on 66 and Buttler was batting on 38 not out.

Post lunch, Bairstow put on 57 runs for the fifth wicket with Stokes (29), who was stumped off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja (1-36).

Bairstow got a life on 54 not out, when Parthiv Patel missed a stumping off Ravichandran Ashwin (1-35).

Buttler put on 61 runs with Bairstow for the sixth wicket. They brought up England's 200 mark in the 61st over.
