Badgers hockey falls at Ohio State
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wisconsin men's hockey squad got several scoring chances but rarely capitalized on Friday night, leading to a 2-1 setback at Ohio State.
Wisconsin lost despite rattling off 30 shots on goal, leaving its all-time record on Valentine's Day at an eye-opening 2-15-1.
Ohio State jumped out to a quick, 2-0 lead by the 14:25 mark of the first period, when Darik Angeli tallied a goal.
After a scoreless second period, the eighth-ranked Badgers (16-9-2 overall, 7-5-1-0 Big Ten) cut their deficit in half courtesy of a Michael Mersch tally at 3:42 of the third stanza.
Alas, Wisconsin couldn't mount any more offense, and endured defeat as a result.
The Badgers lost despite 28 saves from netminder Joel Rumpel. Ohio State (15-9-3, 5-5-3-2 Big Ten), meanwhile, got 29 saves from its goalie, freshman Christian Frey.
The Badgers and Buckeyes are set to duel again on Saturday night.
