Badgers coach Paul Chryst named Big Ten Coach of the Year
Wisconsin Badgers coach Paul Chryst was named the Big Ten's Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year on Tuesday, winning the annual award voted on by the conference's coaches.
Penn State boss James Franklin was the media's choice, winning the Dave McClain Coach of the Year award.
Chryst led the Badgers to a 10-2 record and a 7-2 mark in conference play, winning the Big Ten West Division in just his second season at the helm and becoming the first Wisconsin coach to win the award, and the third overall.
Athletic director Barry Alvarez (1993, 1998) and Bret Bielema (2006) won the Dave McClain award.
Chryst and Franklin are set to square off in the Big Ten title game Saturday, as the Badgers look to secure the conference title and strengthen their bid for a spot in the College Football Playoff.
The Big Ten defensive awards were also announced Tuesday.
Junior linebacker T.J. Watt was a consensus pick for the All-Big Ten First Team, while senior cornerback Sojourn Sheldon was a first-team selection by the media and a second-team pick of the coaches.
Senior linebacker Vince Biegel earned second-team honors from the coaches and third-team from the media.
Senior safety Leo Musso and junior safety D'Cota Dixon were also third-team picks by the media, while earning honorable mentions from the coaches.
Defensive lineman Conor Sheehy was named by the coaches to the third team, and joined fellow linemen Alec James and Chikwe Obasih, as well as linebackers T.J. Edwards and Jack Cichy, as honorable mentions.
